ANNUAL TRIP TO TONGARIRO

NATIONAL PARK

The annual trip of the Ruapehu Ski Club to Tongariro National Park takes place on the 17th inst., when a party of some twenty-five ladies and gentlemen will take train to Waimarino. Next day they will reach the Park at mid-day and stay at- the Whakapapa huts.

This year, says the Wanganui Chronicle, the first annual sports will he held, and ski races, jumping and turning contests will be held. Trophies to the value of £20 will be awarded the successful competitors. As other parties are being formed in Wellington and Auckland, it is expected that there will bo at least forty contestants taking part. Tlie sports will be held on the most suitable day nearest the 25th August.

The Government cinema operator will be present filming the seenefry, the sports and the various activities qf the party. The pictures will afterwards be exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition to be held at London.

The Council of the Hawera. Acclimatisation Society, with the curator, spent a busy day at the hatchery lash week. Their work was in connection with the rearing of pheasants and birds generally.. Rearranging and setting up the pheasant breeding pens for >iext season with new stock and a general change 'around was found of a very interesting nature. ' A still greater number of breeding pens was , being used tliis year,' and it"is hoped by improved housing and the growing of further quantities of a variety of natural foods that even still further success may be obtained. By following nature as closely as possible in the rearing and feeding of pheasants, the society find a number can- more easily be reared and grown to good s.u.ong birds.
