PRODUCERS' SHIPPING LINE.
EXPORT LEVY SUGGESTED
(By Telegraph—Special to Star.) AVELLINGTON, Aug. 13. Interest in the proposal for a producers' shipping line has been revived in Parliament by the report that a select committee is preparing to recommend a scheme for the approval of the House. The lines of the proposal would involve legislation. The financial basis would be an export levy on the principal products. The supporters of the producers' shipping scheme advocate a small levy, whi:h would be credited, to each producer, returning an average of £250.000 annually. This would, it is suggested, soon amount to sufficient to justify entering upon a co-operative shipowning arrangement' with guaranteed business through the boards controlling the shipment of the principal lines of products. AVhen the line becomes established it is proposed to issue shares to producers of the 6ame value as the amount ihev nave contributed to the capital of the producers' company through the medium of the levy. The discussion of this important proposal is likely to take place when the Dairy Export Control Bill is reported from the select committee.
