LORD KITCHENER.
TRIBUTE TO HIS GREATNESS
LORD BIRKENHEAD'S BOOK
BX CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT '■ Received Oct. 28. 11.15 a.m. ' ! LONDON, Oct. 27. ' Lord Birkenhead has published a Book of esays entitled "Points of View,'' in which he asserts that if Mr. Churchill had been Prime Minister it "is certain that he would have won through at thAe> -Dardanelles. Lord iirkehEead, referring to Lord Kitchener, states ffiat Lord Esher failed to understand or value the indomitable RaghsEman who was the great outstanding figure of the war, and who will loom in history as conspicuous as Marshal Foch. Lord Kitchener never had an absolutely free hand, and he often had to compromise, since he could not sweepjf^BWay our whole Cabinet Government system. No living soldier, could have made a tenth as much out of the . actual situation as Lord Kitchener made. The fact that he had not made more was due to the Governmental system. Lord Birkenhead controverts Lord Esher's allegation that Lord Kitchener would have liked to launch every gun he could collect from the Western Front for an attack in the , Near East, and says that Lord Kitchener, never, either for east or west, * looked on the war as an indivisible whole. Lord Birkenhead eulogises Lord Kitchener's serenity with which he endured the press campaign in"V stigated by a subordinate. i PARIS, Oct. 27. i The French press is showing unprecedented interest in the British - election. It unanimously welcomes Mr. Bonar Law's policy statement, and expresses the belief that this gives a high hope of overcoming Anglo-French misunderstandings. Gaulois" says that if Mr. Bonar Law succeeds England will again adopt her traditional attitude of sincerity and prudence, with ho further adventures, sudden changes, warlike speeches, or threatening gestures.—Aus.-N.Z.
