LONDON, Oct. 26. The Duke of Devonshire, chairman of the executive council of the Empire Exhibition, made a statement, in which he said he was glad to have the opportunity of removing a misunderstanding regarding the use of Empire materials. Mr Robert Donald, in resigning, had thought fit to give publicity to a difference of opinion with his colleagues in such a way as to suggest that the committee was entirely opposed to this policy, but the Duke of Devonshire says it is hardly necessary to say that this is not the ease.

The whole purpose of the exhibition is to demonstrate the variety ancl wealth of the resources of the Empire, and it has always been the intention of the executive council and the management committee to insist on the application of this principle to the utmost limit of practicability. The exhibition authorities are" now conferring with representatives of the Dominions and Colonies in order to secure their assistance in carrying out this principle and show them the difficulties encountered in applying it in certain cases. While the Colonial Institute has not" taken official action in connection with the catering dispute of the Empire Exhibition, leading members of the council are in hearty accord with the attitude of the Dominions. It is the council's intention to use exclusively Dominions'- prod^ts as far as obtainable in the new refreshment room of the Institute, which will shortly be opened
