THE KANIERI.

TO BE BROKEN THY The Northern Steamship Company's cargo and passenger steamer Kanieri, j which had for jpany years past been on the trip between the Whangarei town wharf and Auckland, and when condemned some weeks ago was replaced temporarily by the Daphne, is being stripped at the Northern Company's wharf in Auckland, and is to be broken up. The Kanieri was built at Dumbarton in 1886 and was the second vessel to be registered at Dunedin, where was the headquarters of the Union Steamship Company, her first owners. In 1887 she replaced a small steamer of 92 tons, the Waihi, on- the Welling- - ton to Blenheim service, where she continued for some considerable time until shoaling of the Wairau River caused her to be unsuitable. Consequently she was laid up. for_ some time in Wellington harbour until purchased by the Northern Steamship Company in 1893. j Under the new ownership the Kanieri was put on the West Coast service, and for many years was engaged in the cattle trade at Waitara, where she often went ashore, the entrance to the roadsteadjbeing narrow. On one occasion it was three weeks before she was got off, and she had to be taken to Auckland for repairs. Later on she was transferred permanently to Auckland and for more, than 12 years she has been regularly trading to the . Whangarei town ?har_. ; j The gross tonnage of the old vessel was 202.62 tons and her registered tonnage 115.12 tons. Her length was 105 feet and beam 21.1 feet. Under the late Captain Myers and Captain Johnson she has had many a rough trip to and from Auckland, and, although on occasions she grounded on banks, she had the reputation of being a regular runner, and incidentally a very faithful servant to her owners."
