BOY SCOUTS.
+ AN INTERESTING EVENING. Last night at the old Technical Buildings the Boy Scouts of Hawera were entertained by the Rev. Father Rockcliffe and his friend "Sammy." Before , introducing little "Sammy" he first of i all lectured to the boys' on the scout ; movement in England, India, America, ; France, and Belgium, and also told of his experiences amongst them—how the boys of these countries carried on the movement in earnest, their perseverance and keenness. He told of one troop in England .as being, one of the best where the boys who could not afford uniforms and shoes still carried on, living up to the scout motto, "Be prepared." The reverend gentleman also dealt briefly with the scout laws, explaining their importance and stressing the parts that boys should take particular notice of. The first law was that a scout should be loyal to God, his King, and his country. Why was God put first? Because He made us and we are His. To be loyal to the King, his officers, his parents, his employers, and his comrades he must stick to them through thick and thin, against anyone who is their enemy or wW even talks badly of them. A scout's duty is to be useful and helpful to others. A scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other scout, no matter to what social class the other belongs. If Chinese or French, or of whatever nationality, we should greet him as a brother scout if such he be. A scout is courteous, a friend to animals, obedient to his parents, scoutmaster, and patrol leader without question. The lecture ending here, Father Rockcliffe introduced to the boys little "Sammy/ a ventriloquial doll. "Sammy" exchange jokes with his governor, and then recited and sang. The boys were kept in laughter the whole time. The entertainment came to a close with good-night wishes from "Sammy," who also hoped that he and the boys would meet again soon. Mr. W. Hawkins, on behalf of the committee, thanked Father Rockcliffe for giving the boys a very good time, and Scout Commissioner W. Johnstone thanked him on behalf of the boys. Tlie evening was brought to a close with three good, ringing cheers for ( Father Rockcliffe and "Sammy." {
