PARK CLUB'S SUCCESSFUL OPENING.
i It must hay« been very gratifying ice \ the ffcembers of the Park Club to seer such a large gathering of bowlers, their wives, daughters, and friends at th© i official opening of the 1922-23 season yesterday afternoon. After the heavy downpour of rain last week and? the threatening weather even up to Tuesday night, the prospects of a successful opening did not look too hopeful until yesterday morning, when the sun shone out brightly and ushered in one of the most perfect days. This helped to dry the green, with the result that all who took part in play enjoyed themselves immensely." | Before the commencement of play, Mr. J. M. Westaway (president of Park Club) said members should congratulate themselves on being favoured , with such a perfect bowling day. He extended a hearty welcome to members of neighbouring clubs,, and drew special attention to the fact that Mr. George Syme was with them that day, i whom everyone was glad to see. Mr. Syme was the father of bowling in Ha- > wera, and had always taken a keen interest in everything connected with . the game. His latest act of generosity : was the presentation of a handsome shield for competition between certain ( South Taranaki clubs, which was highly appreciated. Mr. Westaway mentioned i that he had attended the opening of '! the Hawera Club's green the previous Wednesday, hut had had no opportunity of speaking on that occasion. ;He would like now to congratulate .' that club on its enterprise in erecting such a handsome, up-to-date pavilion, [ which was a splendid asset to members ; and a decided advantage to the dis- '•- trict. It was his intention whilst •'' president of Park Club to engender ► that spirit of good fellowship that | should always characterise bowlers, the i remarks eliciting applause. He rel gretted the absence of the patron of the club (Mr. C. W. Curtis) through illness, but trusted he would soon be taking part in play again. Mention was also made of the absence of Mr. H. E. Card (one of the vice-presidents) owing to sickness. On behalf of Mrs. Westaway and himself, the president handed the secretary four handsome < gold feathers for Wednesday com- • petitions. j Mrs. Westaway threw the first jack, and the green was declared open ■ amidst applause. i The time-honoured match (President v. Vice-president) was then commenced, with the following result (President being mentioned first): i Meuli, Patterson, Foden, Hodge 21; Hay ton, Ingham, Hiekey, G. Williams 20. j S. '■ Adamson, vice-president of Hawera , Club, returned thanks on behalf of j visiting bowlers. He made special I mention of the. hospitality shown, and j said Park Club should be exceedingly gratified at the able and lavish manner , in which afternoon tea had been dis- ! pensed by the ladies. i It might be mentioned that visitors were present from Palmerston North, Wanganui, Patea, Manaia, Auroa, Pihama, Stratford, and" Hawera Clubs.
