REASONABLE LOCAL BODIES.

The Minister fov- Public Works, when informing the House to-day tha^ the public works estimates are practically ready, spoke appreciatively of the modesty of local bodies in their requests for grants this year. They had, he said, been reasonable and there had been little duplication, the consequence being that the usual work was reduced ' to one-fourth. Answering Mr. Masters (Stratford), who referred to the importance of local bodies being informed early of^their votes so as to take advantage of the fine weather for road-making, the Hon. J. G. Coates stated that in very ur- ; gent cases where the settlers required roads to get their cream to factories he would authorise the expenditure of small sums in ad- , yance of the. appropriation, leaving it to be subsequently approved by* . Parliament.
