Although the European war accounts for the heaviest portion of New Zealand's pension liability, there are six other classes of pensioners who draw among them about a million sterling out of the gross payments made last year of £2,791,119. This amount was made up as follows: £ War Pensions 1,726,174 Old Age 743,620 Widows' 186,457 Maori War 37,737 Miners' 26,972 Epidemic 65,486 Police 433 There was an increase of 654 in the number of old age pensions during the year, but the widows' pensions decreased by 78. There are 3343 pensions of this class in force, and the children who benefit number 9115. Maori war pensions are a rapidly diminishing quantity, for the total of 811 at the commencement of the year dropped in the latest period to 740. Miners' pensions, which are a charge on the industry, are 506 in number .showing an increase of 32 for the year. Epidemic pensions, instituted after the influenza visitation, are diminishing, the decrease last year having been 166 leaving an annual liability of £51,994'
