The airship Roma was commanded uy Captain Mabry, who perished with the others.
The Roma had a capacity of 1100 cubic feet, and the flames from the igliition prevented the persons beneatn the wreckage from escaping. It also made it difficult to identify the bodies of those later rescued. Survivors told how the craft refused to keep her nose in the air, and kept heading downward. When she struck the cable charged with 2300 volts of electricity she collapsed and burned.
The death list includes men prominently identified with the army and aviation, including two majors, four captains and seven lieutenants of aviation.
