A- meeting of representatives of the SxiauOru Diancn 01 tie Aew Zealand jersey ureeuers' __~sociation an<i tne Ltarailam brancn ot tne r riesian Jttreed- - «rs' Association was J_eld*"oh" Monday evening to discuss with Mr. Singleton (.director of the Dairy Division) the. <;uange in semi-official testing from a two clays' to-, a one day> sample of
milk. " :__',.'■_, • _ The chairman (Mr Ranford) said that when .word was received by him from the department of the proposed change, *nd being" askpd his opinion, he replied that he did- not favour--a -, one day's sample, and suggested that the department stay their .hands until ,' the opinion of - testing .breeders had ; been sought in the.matter. ■ Mr Singleton, in- addressing the toeeting, gave a short review of semiofficial "testing operations in this country, Australia, and the United States. fie pointed out that a one day's sample had proved quite satisfactory in the " States j _ thepvdeparttoent had" been forced to'ad'opt^tnis^ natsthod in view of the larjge- number df fresh.applications 'to' have cow_ 5 placedl nndei^ test. They were, faced with or two alternatives; either to accept these applications and' reduce the number of days for samples to be taken to one day, or carry on,as at present and refuse any further applications; no other solution was apparent. To employ further testing officers was out of the question on account of the heavy expense involved, especially in view of- the retrenchment which "was taking place in all Government-* departments. Mr Ranford moved: "That after • hearing the explanation offered by Mr - Singleton re the circumstances leading to the change in the conditions governing the semi-official test, we endorse the; action of the department and promise our hearty co-operation." The resolution was carried unanimously. . ' . The question of breed associations conducting, semi-official testing was also'discussed at some length, the opinion T being generally expressed that this step was not advisable, the Government being representative of and working for the good of .all breeds^, were the best fitted to conduct this kind" of work." ~,, "The meeting closed with a hearty ~vote of thanks^to Mr Singleton, which was carried with acclamation .-
