BOWLING.

ELTHAM CLUB'S ANNUAL

MEETING

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The annual meeting of tho Eltaam Bowling Ciub was held- in Mr G. H. Buekeridge's office last evening, Mr Jiayton (president) being in the chair and a fair number being present. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance on the year's working of £2 is 7d. Tho annual report stated that last year the club was fortunate in enrolling several new members, all of whom wore enthusiastic and showed great promise of becoming good players. This to a great extent was the cause of such a successful season, and if the same keenness and enthusiasm are maintained this year and more new members secured the club can look forward to becoming tho leading sports club in the town. The entruw for the various competitions were a record for the club. All were keenly contested, and resulted in the Roy. J. G Castle winning the championship singles, Mr J. R. M. Stewart the handicap singles, and Messrs Gumming and Stewart the handicap, pairs. In the Centre banner competition the club won more games than ever before, and were runners-up to Hawera. This result is all the more gratifying when it'is remembered that our competing rinks were composed largely of new.players. The finances of the club for some time past have nofc been satisfactory, but last year was the turning of the tide. While the bal-ance-sheet does not show any appreciable difference, it must be remempered that the liabilities have been reduced and the green and grounds considerably improved. The expenses thia coming season will not be so heavy. The club has to thank Mr Carman for the manner in which he carried oat the duties of ground superintendent with the funds available, and Mr Morgan, custodian, for keeping tho green in good order throughout the season. The thanks of the club are also due to the ladies for their kindness in providing afternoon teas and attending to the comforts of tho visitors. The prospects for the coming season are very promising. An earnest effort will be made to double the membership. With the hearty co-operation of all the members this can be done, and if every member will make an effort to enrol at least one member and assist him in getting the utmost enjoyment out of the game we shall find that the club at the end of the season will be in a flourishing condition, every member thoroughly enjoying himself in the hearty goodfellowship pervading the

club. A very successful concert was held in December, which benefited the club funds to the extent of £86 11s lid. Thanks are due to all those who contributed to make the function the success it was. Mr Holder, the secre.tary, is deserving of special mention for his untiring efforts to see that evejrytWng went off smoothly. In sneaking to the report, Mr Astburyremarked that the younger membersof the club should have a little more attention paid to them. He was of opinion that the older members played top much to themselves and paid too'little attention to the beginner. The following new • members were elected: Messrs Manley, C. P. Baker, Taplin. Donnelly, Rowe, Bluett, Bosley, ;Reilly, JBridger, Cuff, Franks, Ward, C. Pennington, and Dr Boyd. "Election, of officers—President, Rev. J. G. Castle; vice-president, Mr E. Bary; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Holder; committee, Messrs T. Stanners, Astbury, H. H. Judd, C. K. dimming; selection committee, Messrs Castle. Carter, and Carman; ground superintendent, Mr Carman; delegate to Centre, Mr E. Bary; aud/l^^ffE Carman. A lengtKy discussion took place re the spar© ground adjoining the croquet lawn. Eventually it was decided that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to approach the ladies ; with> a view of improving the ground, and if suitable to have it put in order and made'suitable for playing. It was decided to hold a general meeting during May to review th« workings of the club while fresh in their memories, and to hold the annual general meeting in September. It was decided to paint the pavilion, and a working bee volunteered to do th<* ■ work. Mr Smaller donating five gallons of oil towards "thework. A vote'i of thanks was passed to M»* HoWer (secretary) for the able manner in which he carried out,his duties.
