FANCY DRESS SOCIAL.

The ciiiidren's fancy dress social, which was held recently, was a pronounced success in every respect. The hall was packed with young and old from all parts of-the district and the function, being admirably managed, was' thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. A pleasing programme of songs recitations, and fancy dances was rendered by the children, and the excellent manner in which each item was given was very creditable to all concerned. Mrs. W. Craig was the accompanist for the performers. In the competition for the 'girls' fancy dress, for prizes donated by Mrs. F. Hoskin, Kjatie Brown {Red Butterfly) was first and Grace Phillips (Maori Girl) was second. In the boys' com•petitiori for prize given by Mr. C. Willis, Frank Dudley (Swagger) was first and Nathan Hooker (Rags) received Mrs. Petty's prize for second. For the guessing competition, the prize for which • was given by Miss Macarthy, Lily Hoskin and Vera Macarthy xtied for first place. After supper an enjoyable dance was held, firstclass music being supplied by Mrs. J. Green. Mr. , Les. Preece was M.C. CHURCH OF- ENGLAND SOCIAL. The above gathering, which, was held on Friday last, was, despite the very rough night very well attended. Visitors from adjacent parishes were present and all spent a very enjoyable evening. The vicar (the /Rev. J. Gr. Castle) was present and delighted the audience with humorous sketches, tales, etc. Songs wqre given in good style by Mrs. Craig, Mrs. McEwen, and Mr. Sibner; duets by Mr. and Mrs. Seed and Mr. and Mrs. McEwen; recitations by Mrs. Calder, Mrs. Anderson, and Miss Nicholas. Mrs. J. Green supplied the music for the dance, and Mr. Petty was a very efficient M.O. The ladies provided a bountiful supper. PICTURES. Strong's pictures drew a very good Jiouse on Wednesday evening, and the programme screened met with the approval of all and was favourably commented on. The proprietor is assured of hearty support in the future.
