SLUMPS AND PRICES

THE COST OF- COAL,

It has <been freely reported that there is a slump, in the coal market m New Zealand. If that is so; and if the law of supply and demand means anything when applied to coal, then the cost />i coal should show a decrease. Actually the contrary is the case. Coal has increased in price. This was put very clearly by the Mayor of Wellington in a statement to press representatives last week. He stated that for the twelve months ended 31st March, 1921, the average price of coal purchased by the City Council was £2 14s 9d per ton. During the first three months of the present financial year the average price per ton was £3 Os 6d. "It is on account of this," he added, "that a readjustment of the price of electricity, is regarded as an urgent matter. It is one of the reasons for the recommendations made by the Power Stations Committee."
