CHARGE FAILS

At the Supreme Court, William Whela'ii was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Evidence of the making cf bets by letter with accused was given by Charles Carlson (bushman, Kaitiki)*. and Detective McLeod (Gisborne). Several other witnesses called by the Crown claimed privilege. The jury, after a retirement of fiftysix minutes, returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty and accused was discharge.
