LIFE-SAVING CLUB.

Thero is surely no institution more deserving of public support than -an organisation which has for its object the saving of humari life, and ,\ve are very pleased that our suggestion to'form a Life-saving Club has been taken up by the Hawera Swimming Club. As we pointed ,out in our previous article there are plenty of good -swimmers'in Hawera, but organisation for dfesaving.. purposes, which should he the highest aim of x all swimmers, has hitherto been lacking. However, the Swimming Club's decision to form a Life-saving Club has been made, and fortunately there are competent instructors living in / Hawera who no doubt will soon .be.able"to •develop-the organisation in the practical work. Those who ; -join the Life-saving Club will find that the art of handling a drowning person and applying scientific methods for restoration is very interesting, and the pupil has always before him the feeling that .he is equipping himself through his sport for very valuable -work which should "be an incentive to qualify. We would suggest that, after the club has made a thorough start, and a number of lessons in life saving have been given, competitions might be held in the baths and prizes given for winning teams. But, however keen'"Swimmers, are' that the Life-saving Club should succeed*, and we know that they are very keen, the organisation must depend upon public support and enthusiasm, and we hope that there will be a large attendance of both swimmers and public at the .meeting . called for Monday evening to discuss the matter and to put the new club on a strong and permanent foundation
