THEFT FROM RAILWAY STATION

TWO MEN SENTENCED

Thomas John McGrath and John King were charged before Messrs Ekdahl and McNeill, J.P.s, at th? Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, with the theft of a suit-case and two .rugs,, valued at £4. It appeared that the accused arrived in Hawera on the 7th inst. and had several drinks together. Later they went to the rail-1 way station, and, on the arrival of the express, wrongfululy tool^ possession of the^ goods mentioned in \ the charge, which they 'endeavoured to dispose of to several persons for £3 15s". The police were informed and the men were arrested.

, Mr. Ekdahl said that such cases should lie dealt with severely, and that drink was not a sufficient excuse.

Each of the accused was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment without the option of a fine.
