White Island is always active and subject to periodical outbursts, when the volume of smokg and steam generally increases As far j% is known here, the island has been quite normal for a1 considerable time, subject to the variations mentioned. Th c report that a: cloud of asmoke seen from Auckland was the result of an eruption on White Island cannot be taken seriously, ahd the report that tremors were heard and felt on the mainland are absolutely without foundation. A series of mild thunderstorms occurred about th e time mentioned, and the flashes of light referred to were probably due to lightning the rumbling to thunder, and the tremor to "ner.ves ; "
