MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS
DISCUSSED BY CITIZENS.
At the meeting o f subscribers to tlie Hawera Peace Memorial last night, reference was made by the Major (Mr E. Dixon) to the need in Hawera for up-to-date municipal buildings. Sooner or later, he said, this question would have to fee face«L
At the close of the subscribers' meeting Mi- J. R. Corrigan moved that it be a recommendation from this meeting to the Hawera Borough Council to consider the advisability of going in for up-to-date municipal buildings. The time had come, he said, when Hawera should get a move on in this respect. The Mayor, in speaking further to the matter, remarked that the people generally were, greatly indebted to Mr A. M. Conroy for the ready manner in which he had at all times given the citizens the use of his Opera House. Mr L. G. Grace seconded Mr Corrigan's motion, emphasising that there was a great need for municipal chambers, in Hawera, up-to-date buildings which would meet the requirements of the town and in keeping with the importance of the borough.
Mr E. MorrKSsey supported the resolution, so as to enable the proposal to be fully discussed by the Council. He pointed out that the Council had previously considered the matter, but decided that they could not recommend the ratepeysr to go in for the scheme at the present time.
Mr L. A. Bone pointed out that these sort of things * cost money, and that ratepayers were not going to get modern municipal buildings for nothing.
The motion was carried unanimously
