A new record for 10 miies in automobile track racing was established o a Saturday by Tom Milton m the first heat of ihe 10-miie international sweepstakes contest at the Sheepshead ■Bay speedaway. Milton's time was 5 minutes 20 1-d seconds, which i s 3 3-5 f« conds than that made by Kalpn d e Palma on the same track on August 27 last.

TORONTO, June 28. The effect of the Senate's action will not be to restore the saloons in provinces which have legislated against them, but it will have the important effect of permitting manufacture importation and. most important of all, of permitting dnter-provincial traffic, so that thirsty souls in a dry provincowill be able to import from the wet province, Quebec, by express or otherwise, as much liquid refreshment asr necessary, thus knocking a big hole in "bone dry" legislation.
EARTHQUAKE DEATH ROLL.
ROME, June 30. beveral thousand persons were injured in the towns and villages damaged by the earthquake on Sunday in the district about Florence. The hoB--pitals of Florence are reported filled with injured. One hundred and 20 persons are estimated to have been, killed in and near Viechio, the centre of the earth movement on Sunday in the Florence district, according to the Tempo. The> town of Viechio was reduced to a heap of ruins, and a number of villages were destroyed.
Last evening's earthquake, which was mainly felt in the region of Florence, was perceptible as far away as Venice. It is reported that there were some- victims at Borgo San Xiorenzo, 15 miles north-east of Florence, and at Dicomano. near the latter town. The region of Regello (20 miles south-east of Florence) hasbeen isolated. A number of houses in. various places are reported destroyed.
