OKAIAWA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.,

FOOTBALL CLUE. A ineotinor of members of the football club was held on Monday evening Si, 00"^ 6' the of holding a n« Ik uere U"f S °nly a small attendw' -i fc Wi >s dec' dcci to hold a ball on beptember 2, and committee.; were set up to attend to all details. THE SCHOOL GROUND. A meeting of householders was called, on luesday evening to consider the «h_7 °Af additlonai B'-ouiid for tne school Mr A. Lees, cmurman of tho bchool Committee, was voted to the ciiair, and explained tlie position. The area of land attached to the school was quite inadequate, and it had been proposed that the horse paddock, whieti was most inconveniently situated some distance from the school, should be sold and additional land adjoining the school be purchased. An application for a j grant for the purchase of more land | had been declined, but if the householders would subscribe a certain sum it would carry a Government subsidy ot £ tor £, Mr Chivers had made a most generous offer of a section adjoini n?, t^-5F hool > the l)ri°e asked being ,ir y £10° telow its market value. The difference between the estimated value of the horse paddock and the price oi the section under offer was about £125 and the householders would have to find half that amount. It was not a fair thing that householders should have to lind anything at all. There were smaller schools which were muck better endowed than Okaiawa, one not very far away having an area of 15----acres, and another ton acres. However, in other instances there were schools which were even worse off than Okaiawa. > After some discussion, it was unanimously decided to guarantee the amount required, and a good sum was subscribed in the room. There shouldbe no difficulty in obtaining the money. Spread equally over all the householders in the school district, the sum required of each would amount to only about one guinea, and several have already subscribed a good deal more than that. PEACE MEMORIAL. At the conclusion of the householders' meeting the matter of a memorial for Okaiawa was considered. The question was thoroughly _scussed, and it was finally moved, and carried*unanimously, that a memorial to our fallen soldiers be erected in Joll Park. An executive committee, consisting of Messrs Houlahan, E. Meuli, Mortimer, Fraser and Barclay was appointed to obtain all information and report to a future meeting. Some substantial donations, one of £20, were promised in the room, but it was decided not to do any canvassing until after the amount required for the school ground had been collected WORKING BEE. A working bee was held at the school grounds on Wednesday afternoon. A good number of settlers rolled up with horses and drays, and a lot of useful work was done in a short space of time There is a great deal more which r«v quires to be done round the school, and a. few more "bees" would not go amiss but it is too late in the season now ti expect much of the settlers. They are too busy attending to their own affairs. A dainty afternoon tea was Provided by tho ladies, and was nvjch appreciated by the workers. i
