At Wellington last evening (a Press , message states) an investiture was held iat Government House at which the 'l Governor-General presented letters patent of knighthood to Sir J. W. Salmond and Sir W. B. Edwards, and a number of other badges and decorations. The Prince of Wales has arrived at , Quebec (states an Ottawa cable mes- ■ I sage). The Bishop of the Church of England and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church, also the Governor, welcomed him. The Prince toured the city. Mr Joseph MeCluggage's" consent to nomination for the Stratford seat, and yesterday a deputation waited upon him and presented a strong requisi- . tion. Mr McCluggage said that he could not accede because of health and ! other reasons. It is reported that the [deputation declined to accept his re- , fusal as definite, and asked him to j give a final reply on Monday. The death occurred last week, after a long and painful illness, of an old Wellington identity, Mrs Hansen, widow of the late Anders Hansen (reports the Post). Mrs Hansen was born in Denmark in 1842, and came to New Zealand 48 years ago, taking up her residence in Wellington, where she had lived ever since. Mr Hancock, an old resident of Auckland, who arrived with his parents in 1847 in the ship Ramilies, died recently at the age of 89 years. During the Waikato war he was engaged m building the blockhouses, which were the refuges .of the settlers of those troublesome times. He was at the Thames 'goldfield at the opening in 1867, where he resided for many years afterwards.
