COMPLIMENTARY

A POPULAR POLICE OFFICER

There was a representative gathering of the Hawera Bar at the Magistrate's Court this morning, when Senior Sergeant Till, who is on transfer to Hamilton, was farewelled. Mr B. McCarthy, president, said that Senior Sergeant Till, during the three years he had been in Hawera, .had discharged the duties of his office m a capable^ efficient manner. In all his cases betore the Court the senior sergeant had conducted them with •absolute fairness—he had always been resourceful and tactful in the discharge of his duties. On behalf of the local members of the Bar he desired to congratulate Senior Sergeant Till upon his promotion, and to say that he would take away with him the goodwill of the legal profession, with best wishes for his future career in the force. In any remarks which he had made he desired to couple the mame of Mrs Till. Mr W. R. Haselden, vice-president ot the Law Society, said that he endorsed the remarks of the president with peculiar pleasure and satisfaction. As they all knew, when Senior .Sergeant Till came he (the speaker) occupied an official position, and during that time he noticed that the senior sergeant was doing his work •quietly, competently, and well, with an absence of that autocratic attitude which was always a danger with some police officials. He believed it would be difficult to obtain another officer who had performed his work so quietly and so unobjectionably as the senior sergeant had done while in Hawera. He was sure that Senior Sergeant Tili would rise in the service, and he wished him and his wife every prosperity The Mayor, who with Mr C. A* Clarke was on the Bench, said he was glad to be able to express his appreciation of the splendid work carried out by Senior Sergeant Till during his residence in Hawera. He was sure the people were sorry that the senior sergeant was leaving Hawera, but they congratulated him upon his promotion. He joined with the president •and the vice-president of the Bar in conveying to Senior Sergeant Till and Mrs rill good wishes for their future happiness and prosperity. Senior Sergeant Till thanked the Bench and Bar for their kindly expressions towards Mrs Till and himself. During his stay in Hawera his association with the members of the Bar had been most cordial, while at all times he had received every courtesy and consideration from the Bench He would like to say that his work had been hampered by the conditions of the office and the shorthandedness of the staff, but his staff had been _ most loyal, which had greatly assisted him in the carrying out of his duties.
