BRITISH FINANCE BILL.

;EONIX)N,.JJjiIy_23. ■ In the House of Commons, :on the third reading of the JFinaaice Bill, the Independent Liberals denounced -the application of preference to rthe maidatory territories. Mr Chamberlaii^said'that- -nothing in the Bill committed the House to Imperial preference in mandatory territories. There was no intention of doing anything inconsistent with the mandates. The Bill merely empowered the' Government to apply preference by Order-in-Council, which could be rejected "by either House. There was no intention of securing selfish advantage or acting contrary to the spirit o"f the Xeague of "Nations. The rejection of the Bill was moved on the ground that Imperial •preference was objectionable. This -was defeated by 219 'to '48.
