THE EVENING CELEBRATIONS.
Any procession, however good,'seems Ito gain in sparkle and brilliance by night time. And so it was on Saturday. The arches, brilliantly lit by scores of multi-colored lights—the tower, with itg rows of powerfsis lights, set off in the early part of the evening by the rockets and other fireworks, the shops with every window a blaze of light, the Fire Brigade, with their torches and their flares blazing up and anon falling in a glare of color—the decorated cars, lorries and .waggons, lit with many bulbs and with their head and tail lights-^-all created a combination that in conjunction with the great crowds who thronged tho\ streets, made the town take on the appearance of a city, j The whole arrangements certainly re- J fleeted the greatest credit on all" concerned, j Amongst, the most noticeable features j were the Fire Brigade engine, Red i Cross and Women's National Reserve lorries, a conveyance cleverly iUustra-! tive of a ship, the Druids in their quaint costumes, the girl haymakers (cleverly illustrating a ohase of women's work), Bullock's lorry (which showed how to raise New Zealand), revellers, decorated cars in great profusion, two brass bands, lady riders, cowboys, jockeys, mummers, lorries filled with gaily dressed children, a lorry showing an industrial exhibit on which was a cleverly schemed Union Jack made of red, white and blue roses, and i a Republic Lorry. ' j After the route had been covered and j the procession had returned to the start- ' ing painta*(Winter Show buildings) it ! was dismissed. Then there began various series of amusement for the people in the streets, I who were out to be amused and inter-. ested until it was time togo home.' Some (quite a', considerable number),; went into the picture houses, both of which were well filled—others oaraded . the streets or stood to listen' to the • music and singing. On the platform a varied programme was given—-instru-mental items by Higham's orchestra, ' vocal numbers by the' Male Choir, and the Male Voice Quartette, all of which : were uch appreciated. A little along High street on a lorry, Mr Gormley and his company of singers and player® con- ! tributed a programme of selections. ' humorous and otherwise It was getting late before the streets were deserted.
