COUNTY APPEAL

■ _ A meeting consisting of Messrs J. L. > Campbell, E. Stohr, C. L. Wilson, A. : Sadler and E. Parrott. was held on Wed- > nesday night to draw up an entertain * 5J cn t programme in connection with the ' Eltham county's patriotic appeal for the men in the trenches. Mr J. L. Camp- ; bell was voted to the chair, and Mr E. Parrott was appointed secretary A ladies' committee had already met and ' arranged to hold a dance in the Town Hall on April sth, and it was arranged to support this.. It was resolved to hold a picnic and sports gathering on April 11th at Taumata Park, and an attractive programme in connection therewith was drawn up. Messrs Wilkinson, Ltd have kindly given their skating rink for a, skating carnival in aid of the funds, to be held on April 17th, and on the fanal day of the appeal, viz., April 20th it has been arranged to procure the serl vices, if possible, of Hawera or New 1 lymouth Pierrots, when it is intended, it possible, to have a "surprise packet competition" and a "penny race" In the afternoon tea will be supplied in the Town Hall, and in the evening the Borough Council have given the pictures, and the Mayor will ask the shopkeepers to close at 8 o'clock Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Wilkin son, Ltd., for the offer of the skating hall and a shop for displaying prizes m connection with the surprise packet A dance in aid of the Eltham County 1 atnojbic Appeal Fund was held at Mata last night, when there,was a good attendance. •; and a pleasant evening was spent. Unfortunately, Private Davis who was to have been welcomed was unable to leave New Plymouth, so that part of the programme had to be postponed. Mr C. Bootten acted as M C and Miss Dale supplied the music Ex' tras were played by Miss Kemp and" Messrs J. Carlson and Bootten 4. capital supper was provided. The net proceeds will be handed in with the Mata district funds. Mr Kemp, chairman or the Mata committee, reports a successful-canvass of the district. The amount promised for the Eltham So™ >\l atfjxric a P peal is- new well over £300, the "Hard-up" social at Maneatoki adding £8 10s lid; Mr W. Lambi c (Mangatoki) stock, £18; and Mr J W Carter (Mangatoki), £1. ' ' A good attendance is looked forward to at Rotokare School to-night, when the Hon. Mr Carncross, Messrs C A WilkiiiFon, M.P., and J. L. Campbell will give addresses in connection with the Eltham appeal. HIGH PRICE OP LAND. What probably constitutes a record price for Ngaere land was the sale of a 50-acre farm on the Mountain road, near the station, at £62 per acre.
