A communique states: Eastward ot the Struma there were engagements between the British and the rearguard of the Bulgarian army, the 'latter retreading towards the railway. Upwards of 1500 corpses were found at one point. The Serbians progressed in the hilly region of Dobropolje. In a fierce battle on the right bank of the Cerna they again defeated the Bulgarians, and captured the village of Stiever. Further west they continue to cross the Cerna, between Dobboveni and the Brod, and the Bulgarians retreated northward of the Brocl.
A Franco-Russian force has arrived before the new Bulgarian defensive line, stretching firorn Kemali to Prespa Lake.
BUCHAREST, Oct. 9
A communique states: German aeroplanes bombed the warehouses and the northern station, but the damage was insignificant. The situation at the fronts is unchanged. We hold the heights dominating Petrpseny and the Jieu Valley, and are in possession of the Caineri defile. .
Investigation has revealed numerous cases of tri-nitro-toluol (a high explosive) buried in the German Legation garden, also flagons labelled "virus torve," intended to propagate simultaneous epidemics.- among men and hors.es. .
SALONIKA, Oct. 10,
M. Venizelos and other leaders are visiting Mitylene, and had a great reception. M. "Venizelos exhorted the people to submit to any sacrifice and form an army to redeem Greek soil. The crowd responded with furious cries of "Down with the arch-traitor.!" and trampled underfoot portraits of King Constantine.
ROME, Oct. 9
The Roumanians, evacuated Brasso in order to avoid the destruction of other public buildings, on which the enemy was firing. The army's position is excellent.
BUCHAREST, Oct. 10, 'A communique states: The Roumanians in the Brasso district were obliged to -retire towards the northern ends of the Carpathian passes. Minor infantry and artillery. actions were favorable to the Roumanians in the Caineni and Vulcan Passes. There have been fierce artillery duels east of Zimicea, on the Danube, and artillery arid patrol engagements at the Dobrudja. An Austrian communique states: Stubborn" street fighting occurred at Brasso before the Roumanians retired. -General yon Falkenhayn's troops drove back the Roumanians near Poerzbuirg, south-west of Brasso, and then stopped. We defeated, near Foldyar, north of Brasso, reinforcements that were en route from the Haromsgek region. The army of General yon Aarz is now^ penetrating the Goergany mountains further north. v
ATHENS, Oct. 10. It is stated in official circles that all the demands of the Entente Powers are being complied with, except the expulsion of Germans who have beep naturalised. The Greek chief of police, whose removal was demanded, has been granted leave of absence.
