CORRESPONDENCE.
THE WAR TAX
t To the Editor
Sir, —I feel that I owe an apology to you, to Mr Pearce, and to your readers for a "mistake in a letter of mine on-the 2nd inst. I there stated that 200 acres of land, worth £40 per acre, or £8000, with £1600 in improvements, would pay a war tax of 3-80ths of a penny on £1400, or a total of four shillings "and four pence half-penny. It should have been 3-80ths of a. penny on £6400, or a total war tax of twenty shillings. A farm with a Government valuation of the above figure would probably carry 100 cows. The increased profit last year per cow, due to the war, was at the very least £4. With a good toerd it was over £5. But at £4 the increased profit'was £400. So that last year's profit alone would pay the war tax for 400 years, even if the farmers neglected to invest the money. I don't think that any self-respecting farmer objects to it. HARD FACT.
