HELP FOR SERBIA.

, LOCAL EFFORTS.

Those who are conducting the efforts in aid of the sufferers by war in Serbia have prepared a- programme which, should secure satisfactory results. To-night, at the Technical School, three local ladies and three local gentlemen will conduct a cooking demonstration, and sweets, ' cakes, poultry and puddings will be offered for sale, and one shilling will be charged for admission. The proceeds will be added' to the Serbian Relief Fund. Then it is.requested that gifts' of saleable articles, including poultry, vegetables, cakes, butter, eggs, honey, fam, books and sundries of all descriptions may be left at the Plunket Nurse Rooms, Central Buildings, o& Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. These are to be sold on five successive Saturdays'; namely, on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th of October. The 16th will be specially signalised as "Serbian Day." and will be associated with the opening of Smith and Easton's new mart.

Serbia's claim for sympathy and help are certainly very great and very urgent, for she has become indescrioably impoverished and her people decimated by slaughter and disease in consequence of the part she has played in the war. In referring to these facts the Bishop of London said:" "We have to stand by ■ our ally in fighting for the most magnificent cause in the world. It has all come out—the long-conceived plot to conquer the world—and we all know that poor little Serbia was merely the occasion and not the cause. I do not think there was ever such a 'give-away' in political life as the speech of the ex-Premier of Italy. (Signor-IGiolitti)," in which he disclosed that a year ago he was asked to consent to the attack upon Serbia- If anything in the world is clear before God and man it is that Serbia and Belgium have gallantly stood in the way of one of the most1 barefaced attempts to conquer the world by force.",
