*' - — rr-" ;LIEUT. T. 8,/ SALMON.

The weekly parade of tl»e National Reserve %&* held last -' evening, when 60 members answered the roil call, and received a* most interesting and useful course of pnjsicai dim unaer bergeant-Major Hm. itner1 receiving oider to dismiss, the members gathered together to make a farewell presentation to Lieut. '1. B. Salmon, ior some years postmaster at Hawera, and now promoted to be inspector at Christchurch. '* In addition to the, members of the Reserve, there was a representative gathering of local business men, inducing his Worship the Mayor, tiie Rev. Mi\ Grant Cowen, members of /the Borough Council, and representatives of the Defence staff. ,* Captain Kimbell, in a few remarks, explained the reason of the large representative gathering, and then invited the Mayor to make the presentation to Lieut. Salmon. In making the presentation of a suitably engraved wristlet watch,- on behalf of the National Reserve, the Mayor eulogised Lieut. Salmon as a postmaster, as a public man, as a citizen, and as, an officer of the National Reserve. He felt sure that Lieut. Salmon's, popiilarity among the members of the National Reserve was amply proved by the spirit which prompted the members to foregather in such force for that special occasion. Lieut. Salmon, in reply, said it was a hard matter to say good-bye, but he felt, as every true Briton felt when duty called, he must obey. He assured the members that wherever he might reside in the future- he would always remember the happy and pleasant times and associations he" had in Hawera. He extremely regretted having.to sever his ties with the Hawera branch, of the National Reserve, and urged the members to stick together and maintain the patriotic spirit with which they were imbued. He thanked the members most sincerely for the handsome present, and his Worship the Mayor for his many kind expressions. " ■ After singing "He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and "Auld Lang Syne," and giving three ringing cheers for Lieut, and Mrs Salmon, the happy gathering dispersed. '
