ALTON v. WAITOTARA.

The above teams met at Alton on; Saturday, i*e locad players winning by throe points to nil. Shortly after the start C. Hodge initiated a rush, in which H. Hirst and S. Vincent took Part- By fast following up the lastnamed scored a try for Alton. Waitotara shortly after spoilt a good chance of scoring by hard kicking, and M. Hodge forced. The visiting pack then set up a determined rush, which was cleverly stopped by C: Pearce. Alton retaliated in another forward ,rush, and almost got over again.. When time was called the score was in favor of the local boys by 3 to nil.

From the kicking-off in the second spell Alton made things lively, but )vere unlucky several times in not scoring. Free kicks were very frequent on «ither side, owing to off-side piay. Give and take play resulted until the call of time without any further score. For the winners C. Pearce, as half, was a tower of strength to his team, being undoubtedly the best back on- the ground, whilst H. Hodge and G. Foreman, as wing; and three-quarter, and W. Neilson, as five-eighths, played well. H. Hirst, S. Vincent, F. Burke, and,C. Hodge were very noticeable in the forwards.

For the losers, it would be hard to discriminate, all worked so well.

Mr Len Souii&eombe made a very impartial referee-,, his decision never once being questioned; Mr P. Palmer and L. Penticost were line umpires. It was very noticeable that this game was played in the most friendly spirit throughout. The local juniors, visiting Waitotara, won by 3 to nill
