OKAIAWA.

(From Otra Ow^ Correspondent.)

DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB

On Saturday evening a meeting in connection with forming a branch of the Hawera Defence Rifle Club was held in the hall. Messrs Kimbell and Johnson, of Hawera, were in attendance, and the former explained the position to those present. The proposition was favorably received, and close upon twenty residents were sworn in. As the meeting was not advertised in the Star a large number of. people residing outside the township were unaware of the movement, so that when it becomes generally known no doubt a good number of others will join.

AUCTION. ! On Holiday the Farmers' Co-op. Society auctioned a quantity of stock preas gifts towards the relief fund. Fair prices were realised, but there was nothing sensational. A Jersey heifer, presented by Mr It. Linn, brought ten guineas, which was the top price realised for any single animal. Tn the evening the sale was continued in the hall, when a varied collection of poultry, produce, fancy work, etc., was submitted. This part of the sale was decidedly disappointing, prices being generally in favor of the buyer. A lot of fancy work was simply thrown away, the prices realised barely covering the cost of the material alone. It was most unfortunate that the evening was so wet. Under the circumstances the people turned out well, but, had the weather been fine, there is no doubt that the hall would have been packed, and probably better prices would hare been obtained. The Belgian flag brought in £13, and altogether the salo resulted in something over £160 being collected. It is evident that people are beginning to feel the constant calls upon their generosity, and it would be wise to call a halt for a while. The people of the district have no need to feel ashamed of themselves. They have responded rijjht well to the cail for funds, and no doubt will be preparedto make a further effort should it be "deemed necessary.
