SYDNEY, Oct. 18. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the laying-up of therMah'enoy. allegedly/ owing to the firemen declining to work except on the terms which the purchasers of their services declare they are> unable to pay, instances the Government intervening to prevent rises in theprices of commodities and says: "The question now is, will the Government, on the same principle,- seize the recalcitrant firemen, and fbrce tliem into thestokehold, where -a- State official' will' sell their' labor at a fixed price.. It might he," says the paper, "just as serious for the. people to be deprived" of oversea communication, as for cream of tartar to be cornered; which the Government took steps to-.prevent.""
