HALL IMPROVEMENTS, At a Hall Committee meeting, held recently t it was decided to adhere to the original scheme of improvement as worked out by the committee, and the estimate of Mr Syimnans was accepted, the work to be carried out before the annual sports. . SCHOOL PICNIC.
The' annual picnic and prize-giving took place on Thursday afternoon, the 1 weather v-being "just the thing,'' especially after what we had experienced during the previous fortnight. The picnic was held in Mr J. R. Bosson's paddock, and was attended by a large number of parents and former, pupils. Various races were run, the .committee and staff doing all they could to make the duting enjoyable. Luncheon was served at the hall. After the children's treat —a lolly scramble of sweets given by Mr J. .'Mills —the prizes were presented by Mr F. H. •Watts/chairman of the School Committee. Prior to this the children sang a few songs, but outside weather conditions did not ! aid their vocal powers to advantage. The chairman referred to the successes of the school during the past year in the matter of prizes gained at shows, letters, of commendatidn upon school gardens and improvements to the grounds, etc. He then presented prizes as follows: ; Dux, Vernon Marx (who gained the coveted medal presented, by the chairman) . Standard Vl—Proficiencies: Vernon Marx, 80 per cent., 1; Jay McGuinness, 76 per cent., 2 (this boy passed Standards V and VI in one year, and also sat for the Junior National); Nelson Linn and Eileen Perry 3; Alice Dawbin (competency), 5. St. V: Ernest Rogers 1, Eileen Corkill 2. St. IV:.Archie McGuinness 1, Ula Perry 2. St. Ill: Lionel Stade 1, Eileen Swindlehurst 2. St. II: Olive Phillips 1, Willie Symmans 2. St. I: Nita Curteis 1, Lenora Hoskin 2. Primer 3: Elsie McCracken 1, Edith. Hunter 2. P. 2: Laurie Watts 1, Reggie Linn 2. P. 1: Stuart McGuinness 1, Nellie Swindlehurst 2. All the other children in the school also received a gift .book each. Attendance prizes: Ula Perry, Ernest Rogers, Ivy Rogers, Leslie Astbury, Lionel Stade, Harold Hoskin, Violet Bosson, Eileen Swindlehurst. Garden prizes (judged by Mr Gifford): Owen Hoskin 1, Jay McGuinness and Joe Dawbin 2. Sewing (judged by Mrs Gifford): Eileen Perry, Eileen CorkilL Ula Perry, Nita Burke, Jessie Cooper, Fanny Wafts, Elsie McCracken. Best kept room: "Upper room. At the close, a presentation of a shaving mirror and- set was made to the \ headmaster by /the Standard VI pupils as a mark of appreciation. Mr] Curteis suitably replied, and thanked! th,e for their gift. He was pleased, to have, such evidence of the good-fellowship between the children and"|he staff. Cheers were given -for the committee, the. staff, the parents, and the holidays, and the gathering dispersed to rush through the milking for the dance at night. t This was well attended. Mr and Miss Cooper supplied the music, and Mr G. Whittaker acted as M.C.
