A simple way to kill gorse, accord- • ing to Mr Charles Lett, of Wellington, • is to strip the bark with a knife 4 in. or 5 in. up the stem, and about 1 in. below the surface. "Be sure you do ■ it properly in all the crevices," remarks 1 our correspondent. "You will soonlave the pleasure of* seeing the bush ■dead, and no grwbing out of the stumps will be respired to kill it. it will all be dead **ry soon. This is the best time of the year to do it, , while the gorse-is in bloom (says Mr Salt, in writing to tha Post).
In the Victorian Government scheme ' of testing purebred cows for. butter-fat production it was recently decided that • the standard for certiifeate should be raised, and that all standard cows should be tattooed on the inside of . the ear, and calves the progeny of . standard ' cows sftould be oranded to secure identification. The standards . necessary to secure a certificate will be, (1) in the case of cows commencing their first lactation period, and , being, then under three years of age, 175 lb. butter-fat; (2) in the case of cows commencing their first lactation period and being then over three years of age, 200 lb. butter-fat; (3) in the case of cows commencing their second lactation period, and being, men under four years of age, 200 lb\ butter-fat; ' {4) in the case of cows commencing their third or any subsequent lactation period or being then over four years !;■■ pi age, 275 lb. butter-fat. .
