HOLSTEIN BREEDERS.

A meeting of the^Holstein-l^eisan Cattle Breeders' Association, wais held at Palmerston North last week. ' Messrs H. E. Johnson and H. S. Wright (Tokaora, Hawera) were elected members of the Association. Mr J. Donald (Wanganui), suggested the raising of the semi-official test standard by at least 50ibs—from 240 to 290 for heifers and from 350 to 400 for cows. The President stated that there vould be no objection to raising xhe standard if all breeds were brought in. It v.ould h& no good applying, such a law to ere breed and allow other breeds to keep the present standard. He agreed that the present standard was too low for the Miolsteins. - No motion was put to he meeting on the question. Mr W. It. Wright (Taranaki) nferred to the system of judging adopted in Isew Zealand, and he considered that some direction should be {iiven the judges in their work. The farmer vas .after the best dairy cows and it was very often that the animal wearing the ribbon was not one of the dairying class. , ' ' The President explained tn&t it was Impossible for a judge to pick out the best "milker" at first sight, but milkiug cattle were of a certain type, and a judge could only go by that type. Mr Parkinson (Opotiki) considered that the Show was no testing ground for cattle. Mr Donald supported this opinion, and stated that the time was coming when .a cow would not be sold on the number of championships it had won, but on the nun.ber of tested cows it had produced.. It was decided to insert in the next Herd Book the American scale of point* tor... judging, v .iin ofyier" that : breeders might be acquainted with the type of animal to be aimed-at in breeding. It. was also Resolved to forward the scale of points to every member of the Association. -''..-■ A prize of £3 3s is to be given by the Association to each of three shows, to . l>e competed for by young judges, judging to be on the points system. Approval was expressed of the decision, as it would tend to more uniform judging. It was also explained that in Scotland the points system of judging was the only one adopted, it being the only scientific system of judging. The prizes were allotted to the Auckland, Stratford, and Southland shows. —Manawatu Standard.
