PART IV. TRACTION ENGINES. 41. Whenever the driver of any traction engine, being on any road, shall be signalled or otherwise sufficiently informed by the rider of any horse or the driver, or person in charge of any vehicle approaching or passing any such traction engine of the desire of such rider or driver that such traction engine shall stop and cease working, the driver of such traction engine shall thereupon immediately stop the same and shall also., upon being requested by such rider or driver, or person in charge as aforesaid so to do, give and render all such personal or other assistance to enable such rider, driver, or person in charge as aforesaid, to pass by the said traction engine with his horse, or horses and vehicles in safety. 42: Whenever any traction engine shall be upon or shall be propelled upon or along any road the driver shall keep or shall cause to be kept a strict and efficient look-out behind as well as in front of such engine, and in all cases when any traction engine shall be "travelling along any road between the hours of sunset and sunrise the driver shall have a man carrying an efficient red light fifty (50) yards in front of such engine for the purpose of piloting the same along the road and warning all persons of its approach, and the driver of such traction engine shall also affix an efficient white light and an efficient red tail light to the rear of the same, or when waggon or waggons, carriage or carriages are being drawn by such engine then the said red tail light shall be affixed to the last waggon or carnage, find such lights shall be kept burning between the hours above mentioned. 43. The driver of any traction engine shall not drive or propel the same over any bridge or culvert at a greater speed than two miles an hour or over any road leading through any town, township, or village at a greater speed than three miles an hour, or over any other roads I within the. County at a greater speed than six miles an hour. 44. The whistle of a traction engine shall not be sounded for any purpose whatever except at dangerous crossings or corners .nor shall the cylinder tap be opened or.the steam wilfully blown off or allowed to attain a pressure such as to exceed the limit fixed by the safety valve upon any road within the hearing and sight of any person riding, driving, leading, or in charge of a horse, horses, or cattle upon such road. 45. No traction engine, or carriage, or waggon attached thereto shall come upon or pass along any bridge or culvert at any, time while..any person with a horse, horses, or cattle, or with a vehicle of any description drawn by a horse, horses, or cattle is on, or about to oome upon, and for. ..that purpose is within fifty (50) yards of such bridge or culvert nor shall any. traction engine or carriage, or- -waggon • attached thereto he permitted to stop on any bridge or culvert for the purpose of drawing water from any water race, stream, river, or ditch passing under or through such bridge or culvert, or for any other purpose whatsoever. 46. It shall not be lawful for any person to leave any ashes or other refuse from the furnace of any traction engine on the formed part of any road or any water-table thereof, nor to discharge ashes or other refuse as aforesaid on any bridge or culvert or within one chain on either side of any such bridge or culvert. 47. No traction engine shall be upon or travel on any road without having attached thereto a properly constructed and effective spark catcher. No waggon or waggons, carnage or carriages, attached to or drawn by any traction engine upon any road shall have tyre* on their wheels of a less width than six inches, and no such waggon or waggons, carriage or carriages shall carry a load of more than five (5) tons weight over and above the weight of the waggon. 48. The driver of any traction engine mall give immediate notice to the Enzineer or Clerk, or Road Foreman of the county of any damage or injury done by juch engine or any waggon or waggons", carriage or carriages attached thereto, jO any road or to any fence, bridge, mlvert, water-course, drain, side-ditch. >r other thing apDertaining to any such -oad.
