A BIG SCHEME
Times—Sydney Sun Special Cables. (Received Oct. 7, 8.12 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. It is reported that substantial progress has been made with a scheme for establishing an express mail service between Britain and Australasia via Canada. Several British ship-owning firms interested are treating with a.Canadian syndicate to purchase four hundred thousand acres at Cape St. Charles. Labrador, to establish an ice-free port, and it is proposed. to construct a trans-conti-nental railway to the Pacific. It is claimed that the journey from London to Winnipeg could be performed in five days with an additional 16 days to reach Sydney. Blacksod Bay will be the headquarters of the service on this side, connecting by a special railway with the main service at Sligo. The promoters have arrived at Ottawa to enlist the support of the Canadian Government.
