EDUCATION RESERVES.
TENANTS' EFFORT TO GET THE FREEHOLD.
(From Our Manaia Correspondent.) A meeting was held at the Manaia Hotel on Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of considering the question of tenants getting the freehold of Education Reserves leases. There was a good attendance of lessees. The chairman (Mi- MeKeown) stated the purpose for which the meeting had been called, and said that 803,335 acres was the total acreage of the Education Reserves, and that 332,290 acres were situated in Southland. Therefore it would be to their interests to assist the lessees of Southland in their petition before the House to obtain the freehold on the expiration of the present leases. He urged that these being Crown lands, and under the administration of the Land Boards since 1911, there was no reason why these lands should be treat•ed differently to endowment lands at Ohakune, where the freehold had been given. A resolution supporting the lessees of Southland in the matter was passed, and it was decided to send a copy of the same to the Premier through the member for Egmont, and -also to the Leader of the Opposition, and Mr Isitt.
