A CLERICAL PROTEST.
AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. At the quarterly meeting of the Parnell Licensing Committee jtjo-dajy, a number of clergymen attended and objedted to a leaflet issued by a hotelkeeper and distributed at a football match. Canon Mac-Murray read a number of toasts which were printed on the back of the leaflet. These the reader was enjoined "to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest." The toasts were commented upon as being suggestive of indecency, if not positively indecent themselves, and not at all good for the morals of young people. Canon Mac Murray and his colleague" submitted that the person who issued such a document was not fit to conduct a licensed house. After discussion, it was decided to adjourn for a wsok and call upon the licensee in question to appear before the committee.
