Mr W. , Wallace, of the Alton fac- - tory, who injured his back by a fall on concrete on Sunday last, is progressing ing as well as can be expected. Ensign Gibbs, of the Salvation Army, who has been in Hawera for a little over a year, left this morning for his new station at New Plymouth. He will be succeeded at Hawera by Adjutant Cook. Old residents fn this district will remet to he:ir o i'the death of Mr E. M. C. Harrison, who for a time was headmaster of Hawera Public School. He died at Northeote, Auckland, on Sunday last Many here will remember hi:n for his kindliness and courtesy, and sympathise with his widow and family. A Paris telegram says that M. Dubost and M. Desch'anel will be candidates for the French Presidency. Before the ordinary business was commenced at the monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council on Wednesday " evening, the Mayor (Mr A. W. Gillies) sympathetically referred to the death of the late Mr H.' W. Sutton. The deceased had been Mayor for several tonne, and had been associated with the Council for many years, and had been u;ei tif.ed with the early progress of the town. He had carried out his duties <.n the Council, and also on the Charitable /.id Board, with ability. His Worship moved that the Council expresses its sincere sympathy with the family of the late Mr Sutton in their bereavement. Cr Morris, in seconding the motion, said'be had never ssit at the table with the late Mr Sutton, but he had good reason to know that the deceased gentleman had discharged his duties very ably indeed, while he had fulfilled his office on the Charitable Aid Board in a humane way. Cr Mornssey endorsed the remarks of the mover and seconder. The motion was earned in silence, the members standing.
