LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The value of building permits issued by the Borough Inspector for December was £525. The Borough Council, on the recommendation of the general committee, on Wednesday evening renewed the licenses of the auctioneers doing business in Hawera . ' For the quarter ended December 31, the number of stock impounded in the borough pound was 71. Forty horses were lodged in the pound, while cows numbered 18, bullocks 8, and bulls 5. Our Eltham correspondent states that the factories which have joined the bacon combination are: Eltham^ Mangatoki, Normanby, Opunake, Pihama, and Awatuna. The following is the number of bankruptcies recorded in the Wairarapa, together rtith the unsecured liabilities, during the past three years: —1910, 24 bankruptcies, amount £9922 0s lOd; 1911, 18, £5992 7s 6d; 1912. 13, £4008 14s sd. It is stated that the New Zealand Swimming Championships for 3914 have been alloted to the Nelson centre. The Hawke's Bay centre was the only other body in the running. The Borough engineer reported to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening than a 4-inch main (and fire plug) had been carried into King Edward Park from Camberwell Road for fire brigade practice purposes. This, no doubt, will be appreciated by the brigade. During a thunderstorm at Ohakune a commercial traveller Had an unpleasant experience. He was leaving Broadbelt's sawmill in the rain, and had just put up his umbrella, when a flash of lightning occured. The umbrella was ripped to pieces by the lightning, but its owner sustained nothing more serious than a bad fright. Much regret was expressed by Hawera Borough Councillors on Wednesday evening at the decision of the Hawera County Council not to do anything towards improving the road to the Zigzag. The County Council said it was on account of the expense that it would not undertake the work. It was decided to ask the Council to reconsider its r'ecisinn, and to point out that the Borough Council did not wish for a heavy expenditure on the road —only to make it passable for wheel traffic. A public meeting is to Toe held en Wednesday evening next to consider the advisableness of forming a Beautifying Society in Hawera. The proposal was briefly referred to by the Mayor at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, when he stated that he hoped all the councillors would be present. He believed that any work carried out for the benefit of the town should be subsidised by the Council. Any work done by the Beautifying Society would have to be approved by the Council. The Hawera Borough Council is endeavoring to make the childrn's portion of King Edward Park attractive, and at the monthly meeting on Wednesday evening further improvements were decided upon. It was agreed to proceed with the erection of a doubleswing, and it was left to the reserves committee of the Park to choose the .site. The committee was also authorised to have asphalting carried out around the lake, and to select a place (near the lake) where a sand heap could be placed for children. A truck of white sand is to be obtained from New Plymouth. The Press states that the fat lambs which are being killed in South Canterbury at the freezing works this season are in excellent condition, but are un- | usually hard to skin. The skins are what the slaughtermen call "tailormade," so firmly do they adhere to the fiesh. This is .attributed to the fact that the Jambs have been fattened for the most part on m|i|k, having come straight from their mothers. It is said they are harder to dress than lambs which have been fattened on grass. Permission to capture a couple of kiwis and send them to an institution at Chicago, is sought by a Marton resident, formerly a schoolmaster in the United States. His request was advanced in a letter which came before the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Th« society referred the applicant to the Minister for Internal Affairs. The exportation of the kiwi, which grows rarer year by year, is not readily per- j mitted bythe authorities. Not long ago a person who had obtained a number of kiwis ,at a cost of £50, was successful in conveying them as far as Sydeny, but there the birds were seized, on the ground that no permit had been obtained for their exportation. The birds are probably almost as difficult to obtain as permits authorising their removal from the dominion, but they are reported to be still fairly numerous in dark, sunless gullies round about the upper waters of the Wanganui river. The attention of readers is directed to another consignment of English standard ladies' and men's bicycles, that must.be sold for debt at Smith and Easton's auction mart next Saturday, IF PEOPLE KNEW ITS VALUE. "If people knew the real value of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy they would never be without a bottle in the house," says Mr E. Dobell .Budeerv Buildings, New Canterbury Rd., Dulwich Hill, N.S.W. "I have used it in my family and consider it the safest medicine for either children or adults, and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone."—Sold by all chemists and storekeepers.—Advt.

Australia's reputation in New Zealand seems to be rather unfavorable, according to Professor Laby, of Victoria College, Wellington, says the New Zealand Times. Professor Laby was a hydney University man who, through his residence in New Zealand, is able to see something on both sides. "It may be due to the news we receive over there," he said to a Telegraph interviewer, 'but New Zealand is getting a distinctly unfavorable impression of Australia. It corresponds very much to the impression England gets of America, though, of course, it is not the &ame in detail. There is an impression in New Zealand that the standard of public opinion is not so high over here. So much sensational news is cabled over, as to the doings of the New South Wales Parliament, and so on, at the expense of more important matters. So far as 1 can recollect, there was nothing in the rabies about the Government's increased endowment of the University, for instance, and the provision of vhe 200 new scholarships. That would have been very helpful to New Zealand, which is considerably behindhand in the matter. New Zealanders don't make allowance for the fact that only the more sensational items are cabled to them," Professor Laby went on. "Of course I know the other side, because I read the Australian papers. It is not fair that one should have the impression that' Australia needs defending. Inhere is not the good feeling that there should be between the Commonwealth and the doniinion —though New Zealand would, of course, deny the fact if it were put to them."
