ENCOURAGEMENT TO ULSTER.

LIBERALS ADVOCATE FISCAL

REFORM

THE EMPIRE AND THE

DOMINIONS

Among the notable expressions by Mr Bonar Law at Blenheim, much attention was aroused by the strong encouragement to Ulster to offer resistance to Home Rule, and the x>romise to support them to any lengths to which Ulster might go; also by the statement that fiscal reform would be the first plank of his platform. Mr Asquftli's legislation, said Mr Law, had raised the cost of production, and it would only be common-senses to compensate the people with preference* in their own market. He did not seek for a preference which would benefit colonials at the expense of. the British, which Canada and Australia would repudiate. He desired to urge reciprocal preference, and cooperation with the Empire in peace and war. The Commonwealth and the dominions were going to do an immense trade, and it rested with England whether she or her competitors should have the leading share.
