THE BILL INTRODUCED. VIGOROUS OPPOSITION. 8Y CABLE -PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received May IS, 11.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 17. The Canal Bill was introduced into the House of Representatives, and was debated for seven hours. The opponents of the measure claimed that the provisions of the Bill gave greater benefits to Canadian and British vessels than to American. The opponents also prophesied the complete overthrow of Boston, Portland (Oregon), Seattle, and other American ports if the Bill were adopted.
