CORRESPONDENCE.

COAL SOOT AND ASHES.

CTo t-e Editor.)

Sir, —Can you inform me (or any of your horticultural friends) if coal ashes and coal soot are of any use as a. fertiliser for the garden, just the same as ashes and soot are from rata and other New Zealand firewood ? I refer more particularly to the ashes from the Tanpiri (Waikato) coal. It is a very fi»» yellowy ash —something the color of a grindstone. Now firewood is getting' so scarce, and high price coal is being used as a substitute, and a number of people are wondering if they will have any more ashes for their gardens, etc. I am under the impression that coal ashes are useless for manure, and that coal soot is only of value as an insecticide. i AMATEUR. (Should any of our readers supply the information desired by "Amateur," they will have the satisfaction of knowing that it will be of fairly general use and interest.:—Ed.)
