A brief reference to the expenditure out of the Consolidated Revenue during the financial year ended March 31, was made by' the Premier a few weeks ago, when announcing that the year closed with a surplus- of £805,095, The detailed figures gazetted to-night show that the expenditure «m annual appropriations increased last year by £753,494. These were small decreases in the expenditure of tEe Finance, Native, and Legislative Depwrtmerits, but otherwise there was an all round heightening of expenditure, in which Defence and Education figure largely. Among tfee permanent appropriations is the sum of £386,962 spent on old age pensions. This shows an increase of J£20,927, compared with tie previous year, and there is also the small total of £1961 fcj represent the first few months' pensions to widows under the ntfvir scheme Defence cost £401,870, Education £1,012,048. The' sum of £'8131,483 was expended upon" iSie acquision of land under the Lands &>r Settlement Act;.
