LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr AA r. C. Besky has been appointed Postmaster at Alton, in succession to Mr Stannard, resigned. Even a careful farmer is not always a capable estimator of the probable yields of his own crops (says the North Otago Times). An Oamaru farmer estimated that his oats would yield about 40 bushels to the acre, and he under-estimated by about 40 bushels. The amount received for sales of eggs in connection with the Utility Poultry Club's last egg-laying competitions at Christchurch totalled £407 10s 3d. The cost of fodder ar-d meat to produce the 2ggs amounted to £163 Is 2d. At Broken Hill (New South Y/ales) a prosecutor, who declined to give evidence against an accused person, was ordered to undergo 24 hours' imprisonment for contempt of court. On Saturday the Stratford Dairy Company will pay out £4306 for April milk, as against £3412 for the corresponing month last year. Cardiff will pay out £1059; Ngaire, £1895; and Lowgarth £1428. In each case the payment is in excess of last year's April payment. It is sta ted (says the Lyttelton Times) that the State Forestry Department has been successful in securing a farther area of 1,000 acres in the vicinity of Hanmer Springs, suitable for treeplanting. Probably the land will be cleared of scrub immediately so as to allow tree-planting operations to proceed. i The Waimate Advertiser (Canterbury) states that a resident in the district has a 2-J-acre field of onions that he expects to yield 16 tons to the acre. The price is about £11 per ton. The same farmer has sent 30 tons of broccoli away this season to a Christchurch firm of pickle-makers. A man who was charged in the Invercargill police court with procuring liquor while under the currency of a prohibition order, sent a letter of apology for his non-attendance at the court, as he had left for Australia. He had mixed with bad companions while in Invercargill, but he now hoped to mend his ways. He was fined £10; in default two months' imprisonment. His companion was fined £3 and costs. Mr A. D. Hatha way, who was formerly an employee in the Telegraph Department at Timaru, and who went to England to study wireless telegraphy at Marconi's school, has passed the Government and Marconi examinations with honours. He has written to his parents at Timaru (says the Timaru Herald), statins that he has been appointed to the. White Star liner Megantic, 15,000 tons, and sailed in her as wireless operator from Liverpool on March 30, for American ports. One of those curious facts of which the housewife is ignorant until science tells her, was referred to at a lecture by Miss Trent (says the Christchurch Press) She was discussing the advantages of electric and gas ovens over the coal grate, and mentioned that with the last the heat was never even. Each time the housewife put on coal she lowered tbe temperature of the oven by from 12 to 20 degrees. The little wax-eye, or, as he is commonly known, the "blight bird," is reported to be doing good work in orchards and gardens this year. A Masterton resident states that the little bird is frequently to be seen making a hearty meal of the woolly aphis, a pest which clings tenaciously to the branches . of fruit-trees and flowers. The blight bird is very fond of the aphis, and more good is done by the bird than by all the spraying possible.

A decision of the Hastings Borough Council to enforce the by-laws prohibiting goods being exhibited outside shops has been received with d, spirit of peaceful submission by most of the business people concerned (says the Tribune). In some cases the shopkeepers are still defying the law, others are taking a very strained view of it, while one firm, not to be completely outdone, has erected a display of goods in a right-of-way adjoining its premises. Attention is directed to the unreserved sale of 400 Holstein Jersey cross heifers to be held by Messrs Gillies and Nalder at their Hawera yards to-mor-row, at 1 p.m. The heifers are well worth the notice of dairy farmers. On Saturday an important sale of freehold land will be held by Messrs Gillies and Nalder, on behalf of Mr AY. Duirs, and Captain Macnab, of Whakamara. The sale will be held at the firm's horse bazaar, Princes street, at 2 o'clock. Very low reserves have been put on, and easy terms are offered. The Oddfellows' annual ball will be held at Manaia on Monday, June 3. The A.M.P. Society gives notice of intention to issue a copy policy.
