On Thursday,1 May 2, I had a large attendance at Mr Walter Chatterton's clearing sale on the Kent Road. Bidding for all dairy cattle was very keen, prices obtained being very satisfactory, as follows: Early calvers, from £5 15s to £8 los; old and late calvers, £4 to £4 7s 6d; empty, £2 10s; Jersey 18 month bull, £2 7s 6d; 20 months heifers, in calf, £3 17s 6d; weaner heifer calves, £1 18s; mare, £13. On account of other vendors, 20 months Holstein heifers, £4 Is to £4 2s 6d j forward cows, £4 2s.

On Saturday, May 4, I held, my monthly horse fair at Stratford, submitting just on 90 horses. Competition for unbroken horses was keen, every one being sold at the hammer. Good hacks and hai'ness horses also met good competition and sold well. Inferior sorts were dull of sale, no enquiry. I quote: Unbroken half draught, £12 5s to £15 17s 6d; lighter sorts, £4 15s to £9; broken draughts, £25 to £30; half draughts, £20 to £26 10s; upstanding hacks, £12 10s to £17 10s; harness horses, £10 to £15 10s; hacks, £4 to £8 10s; weeds, 20s to 50s. My. Rahotu yards on Tuesday were well filled with cattle, the majority being weaners and cows. The former, of which about 200 were yarded, Mere a poor lot. Bidding at the start was slack, but improved during the sale, practically everything being cleared during the day. A nice line of 20 months' well-done Jersey-Holstein heifers, in calf, realised, after spirited competition, £6. Other prices were: 7s 6d to £1 145.; poor, 14s to £1 2s 6d; Mixed weaners to yearlings (best), £1 heifers, colored, £1 16s to £2 12s; others, £1 to £1 9s; steers, best, £1 6s to £1 14s 6d; poor, 6s 6d to 15s; 18 months steers, £2 los to £3 Is; 1& months heifers, in calf, (small), £2 15s to £3 Is; empty 20 months heifers, £3 to £3 ss; springing heifers (small), £4 2s 6d to £4 10s; store cows, £2 3s to £3 7s 6d; forward cows, £4 to £4 7s; fat cows, £4 16s; old, £1 to £1 15s j baconer pigs, £2 12s 6d.

During the week I nave sold privately at the following rates: 20 months heifers, in calf, £3 10s to £4 10s; 2£year heifers, in calf, £5 5s to £6; empty 20 months heifers, £3 6s 6d to £3 10s; colored weaners to yearling heifers, £2 16s; 20 months steers (small), £3; 2^-year steers, £4 12s 6d; bulls, £4; lambs, 7s, 6s 6d, 6s 3d, 6s, ss; dairy cows, £8 10s; fat bullocks, £9; store 3-year bullocks, £5 10s; 2tooth wethers, 12s 3d to 12s 6d; 4-tooth wethers, 13s 6d; fat cows, £5 to £5 12s 6d; forward cows, £3 17s 6d to £4 2s 6d; store cows, £2 15s to £3 ss; fat wethers, 15s 6d. At the Haymarket on Saturday I had a fair entry, realising: Pigs, weaners, good, 6s 6d to 9s; others, 4s to ss; .slips, 10s to 13s; stores, 19s to £1 8s 6d; one rubber tyred gig, £26; express horses, £20.
