The Southland News says, "with som« authority/ that Sir Joseph Ward S never again accept office as a Minister ot the Crown in New Zealand A private cablegram from London announces the death of Mr Robert btaines, one of the founders of the JVellington firm of Kirkcaldie and btaines. He was in his 77th year H» arrived in Sydney in 1861, under' engagement to a firm of drapers in that town, and it was while there that he made the acquaintance of Mr tfohi* Kirkcaldie. He and Mr Kirkcaldie were in the same establishment in Sydney tor about two years, and they' then decided to enter into business on their own account. On December 9, 1863 the firm of Kirkcaldie and Staines 'was opened m premises on Lambton Quay and the partnership was continued for twenty-three years.
