MOTOR FATALITY.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21. An inquest was opened on Saturday, to enquire into the death of Thbs. Ryan, who died at the hospital last night from the effects of injuries received from a motor car running into him in Cathedral Square about five o'clock yesterday evening. The Cpjroner said that the police were not satisfied that due care was used in driving the car, and requested time in order to make further enquiries before the whole matter was placed before the jury. Dr. F. L. Scott, medical superintendent of the hospital, stated that on examination of deceased, when admitted, witness found evidence of a fracture of the spine in the lower cervical region. He was in good health and very active for his years. He had also broken his ankle.
To the jury: He saw no signs of liquor on deceased. . Maurice Buckley Eyan, laborer, of Sydenham, stated that deceased was his father, and wjas 64 yearslof age. He was in good health and very active for his years. He was accustomed for "many years to be about town and in the midst of traffic. His hearing Was hot impaired, and he was not blind, or in any way infirm.
At this stage the inquest was adjourned till Wednesday.
